Can you smell a personality?

Imagine figuring out your life partner by just sniffing at their jacket or coat?

Getting to know someone requires time, a bit of conversation and maybe a physical meet up. With the speed at which the world is moving at, there’s no enough time to meet everyone and keep up conversations with potential friends. A new study suggests that you can get a hint of someone’s personality by just sniffing at their clothes.

On Sunday evening, a friend showed up at my door wearing a cologne. One that I learnt to detest because things got sour with someone who loved to wear it. The first thought that crossed my mind when I smelt it at first, was a thought of disgust and disdain. Later on, I smelt a hint of that smell on my jacket and to the laundry basket it went. To be honest, I attach feelings to smell and so do everyone. Smell creates a lasting impression that lives in a rent free space in our heads.

Take the example of the smell of a dirty washroom. It is deeply etched in our brains so much so that, we can tell there is a not so clean toilet even without seeing the indications of one. The power of smelling. That’s how a personality smells or may be not.

First impressions matter. This may not come as much of a surprise, but just how quickly we form impression and which cues we use to make such rapid judgements may very much impress you. Last year, I met this guy and on one particular evening, he wore an extremely powerful perfume that I almost suffocated from a two seconds hug. Being a our first meeting, he over did it in an attempt to be out do himself. He made an impression and a lasting one at it.
In an unexpected turn of events, however, things turned sour between us and I might have tried to forget most things but that smell stuck like a magnet to iron. What changed was the meaning it held. Anytime I smell it, I reflexively dislike the wearer. Call it a natural adaptation to keep off potential like minded people who want to make my sweet life sour.

People may forget how you look but will never forget how you smell.

Just as you can smell out garlic with your eyes closed, so can you smell out a personality.

According to ‘The Scent city’ your personality will drive you to choose a fragrance based on particular character traits.

People who love floral fragrances are often feminine, friendly and love out doors. They are very neat and clean. You can’t smell like a jasmine and sprout from an unkept kai-apple bush.

If you crave to smell like a freshly baked bread, then my friend, you’re are ‘fresh and edible’. You make stomachs rumble because you have mad energy. People who are drawn to fruity fragrances are the definition of fun, bold and energetic. They prefer bold prints and colours and are more out spoken.

Sea sprays and windswept coastlines shout elegant and intellectual. The type to swipe you off your feet with just their look. They go with the flow.

My friend says my closet smells like a baby’s bum, the Johnson’s baby powder kinder smell, but I strongly disagree. If the statement was said in regards to another person, I’d be highly inclined to think they are gentle, gentle on their skin as well as to others. As for me, am only gentle on my skin, my tummy and my heart.

If there is something I would highly recommend you invest in, is how you smell. You don’t have to smell good and expensive, just don’t smell bad. Put some effort. Don’t walk around smelling like a walking bar of kipande, rinse it off! Clean smells great!

  1. Great read. Basically I should invest in a premium quality perfume. This Kathonzweni smell should leave me. I may end up in Dubai๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ
