Vagina in the mirror
Make peace with the mirror and look at your vagina. It is worth it.
Feminine V series II – Vaginal yeast infections.
A yeast infection is a fungal infection that affects the vagina and the outer opening of the vulva. Every 3 of 4 women suffer from yeast infections in their lifetime. Of the three most experience up to two episodes of this infection.
Let’s talk about this infection then, shall we?
Yeast infection is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans and thus it is also called candidiasis. This fungus is opportunistic and only causes infection when the environment in the vagina is conducive for its growth.
Normally, the vagina has normal bacteria which keep it healthy and protect it from harmful microorganisms that can cause infections. Nevertheless, this protection is sometimes broken and an infection develops but more often than not, this bacterial protection always builds it’s self back sometimes with the help of medication. A yeast infection occurs when the fungi growth overpowers the bacterial protection.
What predispose one to yeast infections?
- Prolonged use of antibiotics
Excessive use of antibiotics kill the good bacteria. - Stress
- Lack of sleep
- Poor eating habits; too much sugary food
- Weak immune system
(The defense system of the body)
Yeast infection is not considered a sexually transmitted infection. However, multiple sexual partners may predispose one to get the infection as this alters the environment of the vagina.
A yeast infection often manifests itself on the vagina and the vulva(the outer opening). A normal vagina is red to pink in colour. A vagina that has a yeast infection has a white-grey discharge that looks like cheese or milk cud. The discharge is first noticed on the panty lining and is often odourless.
You can always check for more of the discharge on the vagina itself using a mirror. Get into apace you feel safe and secure, get into a comfortable position and check on how your vagina looks like. This helps in how you describe the condition to a doctor and also gives you a glimpse of how gross this infection can get and more reason to get treatment.
Other signs might include;
- Vaginal irritation and itching
- Pain during urination
- Soreness
- Redness
- Rash.
The longer it takes to get treatment the higher the chances of the infection getting severe and leading to complications.
Treatment for yeast infections only takes a few days either using oral tablets, tablets to insert to the vagina or application creams.
Should you be worried about yeast infections?
Not really. They are a common occurrence and the symptoms and discomfort go away a few days after medication.
However, if you are having recurrent infections then you need to see your doctor.
At the end of the day, check your vagina on the mirror.
If it is about your health, then it is worth it.
