A hungry man…

…Amen!

I open my eyes, and the smell hits my nostrils yet again. This time with a vengeance. The short prayer was only meant to be two minutes at most, short and precise. However, she went on praying and interceding to the 26th minute.

In an attempt to silence the loud grumbles in my stomach, I take a huge gulp of tea from my cup and immediately I let the cup go. My tongue immediately retracts to the back of my mouth and my hands let go off the cup and drops on the floor spilling it’s content all over.

Hot sugarless tea, how dare she?

The brown carpet beneath my feet slowly soaks up the tea, camouflaging the stain and hiding my shame. It is the 26th minute and the minute she finally decides to end her short prayer. Her gaze burns through my back as I hastily leave the room, to calm my nerves and my burnt tongue.

Interrupting prayers, in her eyes, is a crime punishable by death without the option of parole.

“I was hungry,” I say out loudly hoping she hears amidst my rush to get as far a way as possible from her.

However, my nostrils seem to be left in the room as the smell only seems to get stronger. I catch a whiff of her scent approaching me and I fasten my steps away from her.

“Food is served, ” she says, and her voice is slowly carried away by the wind and I don’t get what she says at the end.
I try to ignore the emptiness in my stomach but the thought of eating makes me salivate. That combined with the sweet aroma that has been tantalising my nostrils involuntarily moves my legs towards the kitchen. I take my place at the table and without waiting I take a huge bite of an inviting chunk of meat. I wouldn’t risk another twenty-six minutes of prayer in a famished state.

In the seconds that ensue, my vision is obscured and only intermittent images of faces above are barely clear. I can barely breathe and I am shouting for help but nobody seems to be listening. My tongue and throat are throbbing in pain.

Did I choke on a piece of meat?
