Emergency pill-P2

With the price put at only Ksh. 100, postinor-2 or P2, is a commodity whose supply never meets the demand. It would be right therefore to speculate that P2 pills are sold out faster than condoms in the local pharmacies. Many will blame it on the amplifying moral decadence or the peer pressure to engage in unprotected sexual activities amongst young people, especially those aged between 16-24. I would blame sheer ignorance and lack of proper information on contraception.
Also called the morning after pill, postinor 2 is a mode of emergency contraception that is taken less than 72 hours after unprotected sex to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

My boyfriend did not want to use a condom.’
‘We were to drunk’
‘The condom broke’
‘He forced himself on me’

To mention a few, these are the reasons given for use of emergency contraception.
The emergency pill contains the female hormone progestin which acts mainly by preventing or delaying ovulation (the release of the egg) thus preventing fertilization and subsequent pregnancy. As the name suggests, the emergency pill is reserved for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. However, this pill has found it’s way to the pockets and bags of many and is now used as a regular mode of contraception; preventing planned and foreseen emergencies.
The emergency pill contains a high dose of horomones similar to those in the daily contraceptive pills. The high dose is to ensure effectiveness in the case of emergencies. Nevertheless, habitual intake of this high doses can be detrimental.
It is estimated that P2 will prevent 85% of expected pregnancies; 95%of this pregnancies will be prevented if taken within the first 24 hours and slowly decline to 58% if taken between 48 hours and 72 hours after unprotected sex. The morning after pill is not 100% effective. If you find yourself using P2 more than twice a month then it is due time you re-evaluated your modes of contraception. The more often you take the pill, the higher the likelihood of hitting upon that one time it doesn’t work.

There are other methods of contraception that can be explore in the long run. They include; oral contraceptive pills, intrauterine devices, injectables and contraceptive implants. Find out more here.

  1. Dr. Klits needs a textbook for the side effects ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚… Kwani Faith amekuletea injili??? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  2. Once upon a time, as a 1st year medical student, I used to wonder why the consumption of alcohol was prohibited for persons under the age of 18, and overconsumption for those above that age. Well, there’s no scientific basis for that law. The same applies here. Dr. Samuel Johnson once said, โ€œAll the laws of heaven and earth are unable to prevent man from his crimes. Surely relaxing the laws of heaven and earth shall not dispose man to better behavior. That seems to be self-evidentโ€.
That’s a very powerful piece faith! You know people don’t really care about what we doctors think about sex, if we cannot protect them from things like these (unwanted pregnancies and the like). In fact, history shows people enjoying sex despite the absence of contraception. Perhaps we should make it much better for them by educating them thus๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š
I also think people shouldn’t be stigmatized for involving themselves in intercourse, because of the moral laxity of our culture. Better contraception is the practical thing here… and I think once you handle that, people are better primed to here what you have above other sensitive issues… Thanks faith for this issue๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

  5. It has become a contraceptive for planned and foreseen emergencies ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ what else could it be for, if you get the power to foresee an an emergency then why not prevent it ๐Ÿ˜Š
Anyway is an informative article but most of us will understand the essence of avoidance of the postinor 2 once we get to know its adverse side effects ๐Ÿ˜„please tell us more. ๐Ÿ˜
